What is a common treatment for keloids?

Keloids, which are raised scars that develop from an overproduction of collagen during the healing process, often require specific treatment approaches. One common and effective treatment for keloids is the use of steroid injections. These injections help reduce the size and appearance of keloids by inhibiting collagen synthesis and reducing inflammation. Steroids are typically injected directly into the keloid or into the surrounding tissue, which diminishes the growth of the keloid and can even lead to some regression of the scar.

Steroid injections are frequently utilized due to their non-invasive nature and relatively low risk of complications compared to other treatment options. While surgical removal is an option, it may often lead to recurrence of the keloid, making steroid injections a preferred initial treatment. Radiation therapy is another option but is less commonly used due to concerns about long-term effects.
